German Library Digitization

Saying that you would like to digitize all the works within your country is one thing, actually doing it is another.

You have to commend the German library project, it is quite ambitious.  It also shows that even when digital preservation is being done, the cost involved is still astronomical and so is the time, even with the best scanning equipment.  There are countries – Germany being one – who view their biblio heritage as sacred, and so they should.

Enter Google though.  Their economy of scale are such that they can outdo what it would take a country like Germany to do in a few years – is Google the 800 lb. gorilla?  If it isn’t now, just wait – it will get there soon enough.
